POLICE OFFICER

NOTE: An exam will be given shortly and as  they are only given every two years, please read the important date below.

Massachusetts Human Resources Division

The Greenfield Police Department  is constantly seeking men and women over the age of 21 for law enforcement careers. Qualified individuals are selected from the results of an examination administered every two year by the  Massachusetts Human Resources Division . Applicants who take this examination are placed on a list by their written score which is utilized by the department to select recruits. Once you appear on this list the fun really begins....

Once you are notified you have passed the examination and been selected you will undergo the following application process.

  •     Initial Interview
  •     Employement Application and Questionaire
  •     Background Investigation
  •     Oral Interview
  •     Preliminary Medical screening
  •     Psychological Testing
  •     Reserve Academy - A 142 hour program by the Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council
  •     PAT Testing Physical Ability Testing  Administered by the Human Resources Division.

After sucessfully completeing the above process you will become a reserve police officer for the department and will undergo the Field Training Officer Program. Reserve Officers appointments will be contingent upon the sucessfull completion of the FTO program. Reserve Officers will be trained, observed and evaluated by Field Training Officers during an extended period.

Sucessful completion of this process will bring you to the level of Reserve Officer. Reserve Officers are utilized on shifts to augment the permanent patrol force. Reserve officers have a probationary period that extends over fifteen months and once this process is completed the officer will be considered a permanent reserve officer and eligible for full time police officer postings.

Full Time Police Officer

There are two methods to be appointed to become a full time permanent police officer for our department.
 

  • A transfer from another police department within Massachusetts approved by the Human     Resources Division and both municipalities Chiefs of Police.
  • Appear on a Human Resources List as an existing Reserve Police Officer for the Greefield Police.

Once selected by the Chief of Police to fill a full time position the candidate must complete the following.
 

  • Medical and Physical Ability (PAT) Screening administered through the Human Resources Division
  • Basic Recruit Academy - A twenty one week academy run by the  Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Council .
  • Probationary Period - A one year probationary period after the end of the academy.

Patrol Officers  Base Salary Range


 

  • $25,000.00 - $37,970.00
  • Shift Differential
  • Medical Insurance 75% paid by town
  • 11 Paid Holidays
  • 15 Sick Days Carryover
  • 24 hour Personal Time
  • Vacation time range 7 days - 28 days dependent upon service years with remaining time offered as a % buyback
  • Stress leave Provision
  • Time bank - 50 hours per employee per year by town. Employee elects to bank unused vacation time, overtime or courtime in bank. Employee draws from bank upon retirement leaving early with 20% of time paid in cash
